GHOSTS OF THE LEICESTER GUILDHALL, Leicester
- Ghostly figures, a white lady, phantom footsteps and more -
NEW LOCATION
PHIL WHYMAN returns once more to the location where - during the filming of Most Haunted here - he captured the now infamous phantom footsteps.
HISTORY
The Guildhall at Leicester was built c.1390 as a meeting place for the Guild of Corpus Christi, which was made up of businessmen and local gentry. The original structure consisted of a hall, but this was later extended with two additional wings, one either side.
The Guild was eventually dissolved in 1548.
Approximately 100 years later and the Leicester Guildhall building housed a town library, which was located in one of the building's wings.
The Guildhall's Great Hall was often used as a courtroom, as well as putting on regular theatre performances. In the early 19th century the Guildhall was deemed too small for its current use as a town hall, and a new town hall was erected. This then saw the Guildhall used for many different purposes over the next 50 years. During the Victorian era the building housed Policemen, who had quarters here and who slept within the building; the police cells can still be seen today where many a miscreant was kept. In 1926 the Leicester Guildhall was opened as a museum, where the general public get a glimpse of what the building was like all those years ago... as well as possibly seeing a ghost or two in the process.
In 2003 whilst filming an episode of Most Haunted at the Guildhall, Phil Whyman and others witnessed first hand the sound of phantom footsteps crossing the floor in the room directly above them...this footage is now famous amongst Most Haunted fans worldwide.

GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
The Leicester Guildhall has many stories concerning its ghosts, with many visitors and groups alike witnessing strange and unexplained incidents; it is widely regarded as the most haunted building in Leicestershire.
THE WHITE LADY
One of the most frequent visitors to the Leicester Guildhall is that of the White Lady. She is often associated with the moving of the furniture and the opening of doors within the Library room of the building. It appears that the White Lady may be of a religious background, as a huge bible within the Library is often found open when staff have closed it the night before. This has led some to hypothesise that the White Lady could actually be a monk in light robes. Nobody is sure who this presence is.
PHANTOM FOOTSTEPS
One of the most intriguing incidents ever caught on camera during a Most Haunted episode was captured at the Leicester Guildhall; unexplained footsteps.
During a vigil in the Library, Phil Whyman (who was filming with the camera which recorded the incident at the time) and other witnessed very loud, distinct footsteps coming from the room above; the footsteps were like that of someone walking on a wooden floor with solid shoes. It was not until speaking to one of the Leicester Guildhall guides that that Phil discovered that it was impossible to actually walk in the 'room' above the library; it was an attic space and could not have possibly withstood the weight of anyone standing on it without them falling through, let alone walking on it!
THE GHOSTLY POLICEMAN
The presence of a police officer has been encountered numerous times within the Guildhall. His footfalls have been heard traversing the main entrance area to what was once the constable's cottage.
THE PRISON CELLS
The prison cells - used in Victorian times - can still be seen to this day. Many psychic and mediumistic visitors to the cells have sensed a sinister person here...will this presence entertain us during our visit?
