HISTORY
There have been several fortifications positioned on Landguard Point over a period of a few hundred years, with the most recent being the building that exists today:
Landguard Fort. The Fort - which is situated on the Suffolk coast -began life in 1717. This original structure was soon altered in 1744 when a new building was erected; a part of this structure is the outer wall which are in the shape of a pentagon and can still be seen today. In 1871 Landguard Fort was yet again remodelled, with the addition of some pretty hefty firepower to protect the outlying areas. In 1901 new additions were made, giving Landguard Fort three new batteries, which could protect the sea and the river to the front of the building. The property was used as a barracks for much of the 20th century, but in 1951 two gun casemates were converted for use as a 'cold war' control room. In the 1960's Landguard Fort was left abandoned and sealed, left to crumble into oblivion. However, English Heritage rescued the property and it is now maintained on their behalf by the Landguard Fort Trust...who even look after the ghosts!
GHOSTS & HAUNTINGS
Paranormal activity at Landguard Fort was first reported as far back as 1750's, by the soldiers who were then stationed here...things have increased in frequency since those days long ago.
THE GHOSTLY SOLDIER
One of the spectral inhabitants who resides at the fort is that of a soldier. Witnessed almost immediately upon his death many years ago, some believe him to be the source of some of the activity which occurs here. Will he make his presence felt during our visit?
THE MUSKETEER
The forlorn figure of a foot soldier - possibly a Musketeer killed when the Dutch attacked the fort in 1667 - has been seen on a number of occasions, often when there is imminent danger to the fort. If we see him during our visit it could spell trouble...
THE GHOSTLY POLICEMAN
The presence of a police officer has been encountered numerous times within the Guildhall. His footfalls have been heard traversing the main entrance area to what was once the constable's cottage.
THE PORTUGUESE WOMAN
The ghostly form of a Portuguese woman has been seen at the fort. She is apparently re-enacting her final scene during her living years, as she leaps from the Landguard Fort's outer walls.
THE MARCHING ARMY
The sounds of a phantom army marching around the fort has been heard regularly. Upon inspection there is never anyone in sight who might have caused such sounds. Are these the soldiers who once occupied the fort, going over their daily routines?
